Did Pentagon send $6.2 billion to Ukraine?

A June 20 Facebook post (direct link, archive link) condemns a recent announcement from the Defense Department. “Pentagon said we ACCIDENTALLY SENT $6.2 BILLION DOLLARS to UKRAINE,” reads the post. “Accounting error. This is straight up money laundering. Every American should be pissed off! Someone should go to prison for this!"

How much did the Pentagon miscalculate the accounting error?

The final calculation of the accounting error is far higher than the Pentagon previously estimated in May, when it first revealed the miscalculation as $3 billion. “We have confirmed that for FY23, the final calculation is $3.6 billion, and for FY22 it is $2.6 billion, for a combined total of $6.2 billion,” Singh said.

How much money has the Pentagon overestimated in fiscal 2022?

Singh said calculations revealed there was an overestimation of $3.6 billion in the current fiscal year and $2.6 billion in fiscal 2022, which ended Sept. 30. That means the Pentagon has an unexpected influx of money banked to use to bolster Ukraine in its newly launched counteroffensive against Russia.
